Rural Rambler How to use

Itteringham Village Shop · Est. 1637

A walk, worth telling properly

Rural Rambler is a village shop's way of getting more people out onto the footpaths, lanes and views around them. Free, precision-built, and works whether or not there's a phone signal — because the countryside shouldn't require good reception to enjoy.

Two Simple Tools

Record one, follow another

Trail Maker records a walk as you go — where you went, what you stopped for, the photos you took.
Trail Viewer lets anyone follow it afterwards, on a map or as a live guide on their own walk.

Recording — Step 1

Start walking

Open Trail Maker and tap Start Walk. The map zooms in close, and by default Breadcrumbs quietly marks your path automatically — nothing to do, it just follows you. The screen stays awake while you're recording, so tracking never quietly drops out in your pocket.

Recording — Step 2

Mark what matters

See something worth remembering? Tap Waypoint to mark the spot, or Photo to take a picture right there. Stopping for lunch or the view? Tap Pause — everything waits until you tap Continue.

Recording — Step 3

Share when you're done

Tap Stop, name your walk, then Share Route. A card with a QR code appears instantly — even with no signal — and finishes sending itself once you're back in range.

Following a Walk

Scan, and it's ready

Scan the QR code or tap the link — the route loads on its own. Tap Play to watch it unfold, with distance and time genuinely counting up as it goes — or tap Walk to carry it with you live: your position shows on the map, and each photo appears exactly where it was taken.

No Signal? No Problem

Built for the countryside

Recording, photos, and sharing all work with zero signal. Before setting off somewhere remote, use Find to jump the map to a postcode or place name, then tap Prepare Offline — it downloads the map you'll need in advance, over WiFi.

Ready When You Are

Give it a try

No account, no cost, nothing to lose by exploring.

Good to Know

Do I need to create an account?
No. There's nothing to sign up for and nothing to log into. Open the app and start walking.
What if I lose signal partway through?
Everything keeps working. The route simply finishes sending itself the next time you're back in range, with no action needed from you.
I switched to another app while walking — is my walk still there?
Yes. Your walk is kept safe automatically. If you ever return to find things missing, the app will offer it straight back to you.
What does Find do, and when would I use it?
It jumps the map to a postcode or place name you type in — handy before a walk starts somewhere away from home, so you can position the map correctly before tapping Prepare Offline.
I saved a route as a file — what am I actually looking for?
A file ending in .rambler.json — for example sunday-walk.rambler.json. Don't tap it directly in Files or Photos; it won't open into anything useful there. Instead, open Trail Viewer, tap Load Route, and choose the file from there.
Will this use a lot of my data or battery?
Photographs are kept small automatically before sharing, and map tiles are only downloaded once and then reused. Preparing an area offline in advance is the heaviest thing the app does, and even that is a few minutes over WiFi, not gigabytes.
Can I add Rural Rambler to my home screen?
Yes — from Safari, tap the Share button, then "Add to Home Screen." It opens like any other app from there, no App Store needed.
